The use of Short Travel Switches can be under or above the overlay. A foil overlay offers an attractive alternative to the traditional Membrane Switches with mechanical life 10 million operations. These switches outperforms Membrane Keyboards under the most extreme conditions. These switches can be specified with LED illumination to provide back lighting of the overlay for the front panel applications. The switches are excellent for industrial applications as you can have a feel of travel and click sound for confirmation of contact.
