The manufacturing process of an illuminated (backlit) keyboard involves specialized engineering to integrate light sources—typically LEDs or lightguide plates—into the mechanical and structural layers of a keyboard.
1. Design & Engineering

Optical Layout: Engineers design lightguide plates (LGP) or light pipes to ensure light distributes evenly across all keys without hotspots or uneven dimming.

PCB Circuit Layout: Design of the printed circuit board (PCB) to host microcontrollers, key switch traces, and surface-mounted LEDs (SMD LEDs).
2. Keycap Manufacturing & Coating

Double-Shot Injection Molding: Two separate plastic layers (usually ABS or PBT) are molded together. The legend (character) is molded in translucent plastic, while the outer shell is opaque, allowing light to shine through permanently without wearing off.
