The manufacturing process of an illuminated (backlit) keyboard involves specialized engineering to integrate light sources—typically LEDs or lightguide plates—into the mechanical and structural layers of a keyboard.

1. Design & Engineering

• Optical Layout: Engineers design lightguide plates (LGP) or light pipes to ensure light distributes evenly across all keys without hotspots or uneven dimming.

• PCB Circuit Layout: Design of the printed circuit board (PCB) to host microcontrollers, key switch traces, and surface-mounted LEDs (SMD LEDs).

2. Keycap Manufacturing & Coating

• Double-Shot Injection Molding: Two separate plastic layers (usually ABS or PBT) are molded together. The legend (character) is molded in translucent plastic, while the outer shell is opaque, allowing light to shine through permanently without wearing off.

• Laser Etching: Keycaps are molded in transparent plastic, coated with black or opaque paint, and a precision laser burns off the paint in the shape of the letter or icon to reveal the translucent layer beneath.

3. Circuit & Light Integration

• SMD LED Placement: Automated Surface Mount Technology (SMT) machines place mini LEDs onto the main PCB next to or under each switch node.

• Electroluminescent (EL) Panel / Lightguide Layer: For ultra-slim keyboards (laptops or flat membrane boards), a thin lightguide film (LGF) or EL panel is placed directly beneath the keycaps or membrane layer to diffuse light evenly across the entire board.

4. Mechanical Assembly

• Switch Mounting: Mechanical switches or rubber dome membranes are mounted onto a plate or soldered directly to the PCB.

• Diffuser Installation: Reflective backing layers and light-diffusing films are stacked to direct light upwards towards keycaps and prevent spillover.

• Keycap Fitting: Automated robotic arms or technicians press keycaps onto their respective switch stems.

5. Quality Control & Testing

• Illumination Uniformity Check: Automated optical cameras inspect the keyboard in a dark chamber to test for dim keys, color accuracy (RGB tuning), and light bleed.

• Function & Durability Testing: Keys undergo automated keystroke cycle testing, electrical continuity checks, and environmental resistance tests (for dust and moisture).
