PCB Based Membrane keypad and keyboard

PCB Based Membrane keypad and keyboard

PCB based membrane keypads and keyboards are made up of copper-clad fiber that is infused into a resin. It's design utilizes PCB as the primary supporting substrate or structure with the switch located on its front side...

A PCB-based membrane keypad or keyboard is an input interface that uses a rigid or flexible Printed Circuit Board (FR4 glass epoxy or copper-clad substrate) as its bottom circuit layer instead of standard thin printed polyester flexible films.

It combines the aesthetic, protective graphic overlays of standard membrane switches with the structural integrity and circuit complexity of traditional PCBs.

Key Components & Construction

  • Graphic Overlay: The top surface, typically made of durable printed polycarbonate or polyester (PET), featuring printed key labels, branding, and window cutouts for displays or LEDs.

  • Actuation Layer / Metal Domes: Tactile metal domes (or conductive silicone rubber pads) sit directly above the contact pads on the PCB layer to provide physical feedback and close the circuit when pressed.

  • PCB Substrate: A rigid FR4 (or flexible copper) board that acts as the base circuit layer, housing copper trace patterns that register keypresses.

  • Surface-Mount Components: Electronics such as surface-mount LEDs, resistors, diodes, microcontrollers, and robust pin connectors are soldered directly onto the PCB.

Key Advantages

  • Component Integration: Allows direct mounting and soldering of active electronic components (LEDs, ICs, connectors, display drivers) onto the same board, reducing overall system size and wiring complexity.

  • Higher Durability & Stability: Offers significantly higher structural strength, moisture resistance, and chemical protection compared to flexible PET membrane circuits.

  • Longer Lifespan: Designed for heavy-duty, high-actuation use, typically rated for millions of keystrokes.

  • Reliable Connections: Supports soldered wire harnesses, terminal blocks, or rigid board-to-board connectors instead of fragile ribbon flex cables.

Common Applications

  • Industrial Controls: CNC machinery panels, industrial automation systems, and heavy equipment controllers.

  • Medical Equipment: Diagnostic instruments, patient monitoring systems, and laboratory electronics requiring easy-to-clean surfaces.

  • Test & Measurement: Power meters, digital oscilloscopes, weighing scales, and field testing devices.

  • Access Control & Security: Outdoor keypads, gate controllers, and security alarm panels.

A glass epoxy PCB, a hard-backed PCB, and a thin polyester layer coated with conductive silver make up a PCB based keypad. These two layers are separated by a spacer that features air vents for flawless switch operation. These keyboards come in tactile and non-tactile varieties, and they can be embossed or not. These keyboards can be constructed with built-in LEDS and can have LEDs for the backlighting.

There are tactile, non-tactile, and capacitive switches for PCB based membrane keypad. Regarding construction, they are also available in single-sided, double-sided, or multilayered forms. These keypads offer a wide range of connectivity possibilities.

Keetronics ( India ) Pvt. Ltd. PCB-based membrane keypads and keyboards can be specially designed to meet various requirements and last for a long time. To protect the equipment from contamination, the switches have internal vents and are sealed. These PCB-based keypads offer qualities like endurance and robustness. During the keypad’s final assembly, a printed graphics overlay was put right on the board.
