A sealed IP-grade keyboard is a heavy-duty, completely sealed keyboard engineered to operate reliably in harsh, dirty, or wet environments where a standard keyboard would instantly short-circuit or fail.
The "IP" stands for Ingress Protection, which is an international standard grading system that rates how effectively an electrical enclosure seals out solid objects (like dust and dirt) and liquids (like water or oil).
How It Works: The "IP" Rating Breakdown
IP ratings always feature two numbers (e.g., IP65 or IP68). Here is what those numbers actually mean for a keyboard:
-
First Digit (Solids/Dust): Rated from 0 to 6. A sealed keyboard almost always features a 6, meaning it is completely dust-tight. No microscopic particles can get inside.
-
Second Digit (Liquids): Rated from 0 to 9K. This tells you how waterproof the keyboard is.
Common Ratings for Sealed Keyboards:
-
IP65: Dust-tight and protected against water jets (you can spray it down or wipe it with heavy disinfectants).
-
IP67: Dust-tight and can survive being completely submerged in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.
-
IP68: Dust-tight and completely waterproof; it can remain submerged under pressure indefinitely.
Key Features & Design
-
Seamless Construction: They are usually made from a single sheet of molded medical-grade silicone rubber or industrial stainless steel. There are no cracks or crevices between the keys for dirt, food, or moisture to get trapped.
-
Chemical Resistance: The outer casing is typically resistant to harsh cleaning chemicals, bleach, alcohol, industrial oils, and petroleum.
-
Washable / Hose-Down Ready: They can be scrubbed in a sink, sprayed with a hose, or wiped down with industrial disinfectants without damaging the electronics inside.
-
Vibration & Shock Resistance: Many are built to military standards (MIL-STD) to withstand the constant vibrations of factory machinery or moving vehicles.
Where Are They Used?
-
Hospitals & Medical Labs: Standard keyboards are notorious breeding grounds for bacteria. Medical staff use IP65/IP68 silicone keyboards because they can be sprayed down with aggressive disinfectants between patients to maintain a sterile environment.
-
Manufacturing & Food Processing: In factories, car shops, or food processing plants, keyboards are exposed to grease, sawdust, flour, or wash-down hoses. Industrial sealed keyboards keep production lines running without hardware failures.
-
Marine & Outdoor Environments: Used on ships, military vehicles, or outdoor kiosks where rain, sea spray, and extreme weather are a constant threat.
